Hurricane Irene - the Aftermath

Well it's been a couple of days since Irene blew through & all in all we certainly dodged a bullet. There was some rain & high winds but no significant structural damage in Costambar.

However ...

On the beach many trees were lost & the storm surge rolled all the way up to the back walls of the Italian quarter with garbage & detritis deposited there.

Some of the beach was washed away, but that's just accelerated the existing erosion patterns. There's a reason we live on top of the hill ;-) .

The biggest problem is that since Monday the Italian quarter & the block behind - where our former bar was - haven't had power. Apparently one of the underground cables has been damaged. Boy are we glad we moved! It always was a nightmare down there which is why we were glad we had a generator, although that cost a fortune to run.

So there you have it, our tropical paradise is returning to normal with APC doing sterling work on the clean-up, I noticed both garbage trucks out & about to get the work done, & now it's so calm we have no cooling breezes .... life's a beach!

Apparently there was a protest about the power situation at the gate today.

If anybody actually WITNESSED what happened maybe they would like to share with my readers.

  2. Well I've just been down to the beach & you wouldn't know anything untoward had happened. It's clean & business as usual.

Big respect to the beach vendors who cleaned up so promptly!

Further good news is that the power has been restored to the Italian quarter et al since 2pm yesterday.
