Any Excuse for a Party Party

December is a busy month for birthdays & celebrations. Just in our little neck of the woods in La Mulata on Saturday 15 December we had the following to celebrate

Claude's birthday
Steven's birthday
Dan's birthday
Ross & Colleen's wedding anniversary
Maria & Wesley's first anniversary of moving here

So, being the bunch of party animals that we are, we had a party at Claude's Mercado.

Santa even stopped by so we could all have a rummage in his sack ...

An Historical Perspective On Global Warming & My Response

For 250 years we have been polluting the planet in order to achieve the fantastic quality of life we have today.
Can we afford to continue to do so?
Are there any alternatives?

An Open Letter to CBS News Radio Commentator Dave Ross.
by DON BOUDREAUX on AUGUST 9, 2012
in CLEANED BY CAPITALISM, ENVIRONMENT, HISTORY, SEEN AND UNSEEN
Mr. Dave Ross
KIRO-FM
Seattle, WA
Dear Mr. Ross:
In your segment “What happened to global warming being a hoax?” – aired during today’s 1pm hour on Washington, DC’s, WTOP radio – you played a clip of U.C.-Berkeley scientist Richard Muller saying that “all of this warming over the last 250, 260 years has been caused by green house gases emitted by humans.”
Being no physical scientist myself, I accept Mr. Muller’s claim. But contrary to most people’s reaction to this news, my reaction is “What a deal!”

In exchange for slightly warmer global temperatures, humanity gets off-the-charts benefits never before enjoyed by ordinary men and women – benefits that began to flow only 250, 260 years ago. In industrialized countries, these benefits include a near-tripling of life-expectancy; a growth in average real per-capita income to a level at least 30 times higher than it was a mere three centuries ago; an end to famine and plagues; abolition of the multi-millennial-old institution of slavery; widespread literacy; and an unprecedented expansion in women’s rights and opportunities – all these wonders, and more, from bourgeois commerce and industry powered in part by fossil fuels. Has humanity ever gotten so much at such a puny price?

Asked differently, who among us would choose to exchange modernity and its stupendous prosperity for whatever reduction in global temperature we’d enjoy had all the greenhouse gasses emitted over the past 250, 260 years never been released?

Sincerely,
Donald J. Boudreaux
Professor of Economics
George Mason University
Fairfax, VA 22030

P.S. None of the above suggests that, at the margin, reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions aren’t desirable. They might or might not be, depending on the attendant costs and benefits. But historical perspective – which is utterly lacking amidst popular and media commentary on this question – is necessary. If the choice were between, on the one hand, all the commerce and industry and its attendant greenhouse-gas emissions over the past 250, 260 years, and, on the other hand, none of that industry and (hence) no industry-released greenhouse gasses over the past 250, 260 years, how many rational people would choose the latter?

My response.

The historical perspective is a very interesting one, and one which cannot be ignored although I do take issue with a few statements.

“an end to famine and plagues; abolition of the multi-millennial-old institution of slavery;”

Over one billion people on Earth live below the poverty line, are hungry and AIDS and other diseases are rampant in those areas with the greatest poverty. Despite the fact that they can be treated effectively through the use of the latest drugs – which of course these very people cannot afford. I would suggest that there is MORE human suffering now than there was 250 years ago.

As regards slavery, the use of so-called sweatshop labour by multi-national corporations is surely slavery by another name. These people, often young children, MUST work in order to earn the money to survive, the only difference between this system and the old system is that a tiny amount of money has been added into the equation. Which often finds its’ way back into the coffers of the corporations through the purchases made by the workers.

“If the choice were between, on the one hand, all the commerce and industry and its attendant greenhouse-gas emissions over the past 250, 260 years, and, on the other hand, none of that industry and (hence) no industry-released greenhouse gasses over the past 250, 260 years, how many rational
people would choose the latter?”

None.

However we do not live in the past, but in the present and the wise man will have his gaze firmly fixed to the future. The wise man will also know that with the current level of technological knowledge we possess, there is no need to burn fossil fuels. Renewables – solar, wind, geothermal, wave & tide power – could easily power the whole world with zero greenhouse gas emissions. The stumbling block is not lack of technology, but a lack of political will, since the very same corporations who supply the modern society with the fuel and goods also control governments through various methods – lobbying, contributions, payment of taxes, creation of jobs. No politician or government is powerful enough to challenge them.

The Imperial Capitalist Industrial System has brought mankind to its current level. However the cycle of constant unlimited growth that this system demands is not sustainable on a planet with limited resources and 7 billion humans.

The Last Post

This will be the last blog post for MarLou's Restaurant in Costambar. In fact it will be the last blog of any business we have in Costambar.

After careful consideration and analysis of trading records spanning over three and a half years, we have decided that Costambar is un-sustainable for us from a business perspective. Rather than throw good money after bad, we are moving on.

It is a shame that Costambar offers us no viable business opportunities, for we like the town, its' people and the laid-back atmosphere. We have made many friends, and unfortunately have lost too many in tragic circumstances.

For those of you who do dine out there is good news. Since MarLou's Restaurant has closed, two italian restaurants have (re)-opened, Pedro has his own place, and come winter maybe somebody will be doing a new karaoke somewhere in town. Not forgetting the five beach bars/restaurants, R&B Bakery, Sam's Bar at L'Oase, Bieke's Bar, Peter Green's all the other eateries that you have at your disposal.

We will be sending one further email from our current email address to all subscribers. If you access this blog through any other means & are interested in finding out what's happening with us, please email us at therestaurantcostambar@gmail.com and I'll add you to the newsletter.

For the good times we thank you all.

Party Time

Yesterday was Liz's birthday (from Bieke's Bar) & Saturday is Louise's birthday, so this weekend there are some celebrations planned.

On Saturday night MarLou's will be closed because we will be celebrating at Peter Green's restaurant. All are welcome to join us for a drink there.

On Sunday from 2pm the party starts at Bieke's Bar with a hotdog & rum drink or beer for RD100.

We will then be moving to MarLou's from 6pm(ish) to dance the night away, possibly with some singing! & doubles for single price on rum all night.

We hope to see you there.

With the introduction of the Ham Salad we now have six dishes for RD200 or less available for you. You could have a healthy three course meal for just RD300 at Marlou's!

It was a severe test but it Passed!

At last we had some rain last night to test the repaired gutter above the entrance to MarLou's. It passed with flying colours, so our customers won't be getting soaked when they pass through the entrance. More importantly, I won't get soaked when I lock up at night!

Who said "shame"? ....

Back to food matters:-

We have a new selection of fresh herbs in our Summer Pasta & Chicken Garden Pasta. A delicious, refreshing blend of Sage, Rosemary & Lemon Grass. Now they really do taste of Summer. Why not try one today, from only RD150!

Also, don't forget our Cocktail of the Month is the refreshing, tangy Daiquiri, only RD70!

We hope to see you soon

Dinner & a Sing-Song

Last night we had a musical dinner crowd in MarLou's.

After their dinners they insisted I boot-up the karaoke so they could finish the evening with a sing-song. They even let me join in!

We mostly sang ballads & I even serenaded Louise - I like seeing her squirm with embarrassment heehee.

The best parties are often the impromptu ones.

We can of course also cater for more formal parties at MarLou's. Call us for further details or pop in to discuss your requirements.

Enjoy your week.

Blog & ye shall receive!

So, the other day I blogged about our spontaneous karaoke parties & lo & behold we had one the same night!

You all know I'm the best host on the North Coast - hey I make the singers sound GOOD!

Come to MarLou's & if you want to sound like Celine Dion or Tony Bennet!

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

Yes, we're still open!

And we will remain open all Summer for you.

It's definitely "Summer Slumber" time in Costambar now, in fact the whole North Coast is quiet. The weather is hotting-up too, everybodys major concern seems to be keeping cool.

Luckily for us there's always a nice breeze at MarLou's. If you visit us & don't see us behind the bar, we are on the terrace. Usually enjoying a nice cool drink. Of course you're welcome to join us!

On those rare occasions when it rains, you will be pleased to hear that the gutter over the entrance has finally been fixed so you don't have to brave our tribute to Victoria Falls on your way in any more.

Right, enough gossip, time to talk about food!

For the carnivors with smaller appetites we have added ground chicken to the Summer Pasta for an extra RD50 to give us :-

Chicken Garden Pasta
Ground chicken marinaded in fresh herbs
sauteed in olive oil
served on a bed of angelhair pasta
RD200

Also we will soon be making up some Natural Vanilla Pod Ice Cream which, as always will be available as a dessert or to take home.

Don't forget ..... if you fancy making your own entertainment just give us a call any night before 8.30pm & we can have a karaoke party.

Enjoy your week

More Summer Treats

Louise has been busy in the kitchen again & has created a delicious Tomato & Fresh Herb Soup.

Enjoy it chilled gaspacho-style or hot if you prefer. It's the perfect compliment to our Summer Pasta, light & refreshing.

Served with a roll & butter, regular RD100 or large RD150.

A Lighter Option for Summer

Now the weather's really hotting-up we realise that not everybody wants a large meal, so Louise has come up with this delicious Summer Pasta, which is vegetarian too!

Fresh Herbs
sauteed in Olive Oil
served on a Nest of Angel-Hair Pasta
RD150.

We have also re-stocked our Ice Cream and, as I mentioned, we now have Frozen Lemonade available if you want a long cool non-alcoholic drink.

Thursday is DeeDee's last night before she returns to the "frozen north" for the Summer, I know we'll all miss her bubbly personality, so why not come down & give her a proper Costambar send-off!

As always Thursday will be Open Mic night & Saturday dancing & karaoke by request.

Enjoy your week

It's getting warm here now

Well I think Summer has officially arrived in Costambar. The days are getting hotter & the nights are warm & sticky.

Luckily MarLou's is blessed with a near-constant breeze all year round, & when that doesn't blow we always have our fans to keep our customers cool.

A nice long refreshing cocktail or "iced lemonade" is always available too.

Lately Louise & I have been sitting more & more on our sun terrace, which in addition to the aforementioned breeze, benefits from being in the shade whenever we are open, so why not try dining al-fresco at MarLou's some time?

This weeks' events

Thursday - Open Mic Night - come down & reveal your hidden talents to Costambar!

Saturday - Dancing & karaoke by request.

Enjoy your week
Mark & Louise

PLEASE NOTE
Due to other commitments this week only we shall be closed on Sunday.

Price rises and Summer Program

First the bad news - this week the price of Bohemia beer rose by almost 50%. As a result, unfortunately we have had to raise our price to you by RD10 per bottle, which is only 15% by the way.

Now the happy news!

Throughout Summer, & possibly through Autumn & Winter too, Thursday will be Open Mic Night. Anybody who wants to entertain our customers is free to take the stage & do his or her thing.

If you want to play some music or sing, you can.
If you want to recite poetry, you can.
If you want to tell jokes, you can.

We believe there are lots of talented people in Costambar & we sincerely hope they will come along on Thursdays & share their gifts with us all.

Just in case nobody wishes to share, we can have a dance & sing-song too ;-)

Saturdays, as previously stated, are traditionally karaoke nights, but only if there is a demand from the singers. Otherwise we'll put on some dance music or whatever you want to hear.

Enjoy your week

Election weekend

We've been investigating the possibility of opening this weekend, it's election time here & the drinking laws are somewhat stringent at these times.

The upshot of our enquiries is that we WILL be open this weekend as usual, so Saturday it's dancing/karaoke & Sunday for dinner.

Thursday, May 17, 2012

Don't forget!

Live guitar music tonight at MarLou's from 8pm(ish).

Live Music at MarLou's

Good news!

This Thursday, 17th May, we're having more live music at MarLou's.

Ivan is coming over from Cabarete with his guitar to play for us all.

His day job is a tattooist & he will be in Costambar for a couple of days, so if you want to discuss tattoos with him beforehand his number is 829-846-6863.

You see, we promised you music over the Summer!

Thursday, from 8pm ... ish

A New Offer & Summer Program

To celebrate our new Cocktail List we're introducing Cocktail of the Month.

This month it's the White Lady for only RD100! (Normal price RD150).

Now the summer is here our Saturday night program will differ slightly. If people want to sing, karaoke will be available as always, but we're clearing more space for dancing to classic rock n roll, jive & anything else our customers request.

We hope to see you there!

Wednesday, May 9, 2012

A slight glitch ...

Unfortunately, due to health reasons, Louise won't be able to work for the rest of the week.

MarLou's will still be open as usual though from 6pm Wednesday thru Sunday, but since I'm working solo most of the time, our usual speedy service may be umm not-so-speedy.

It would help me no end if diners call ahead on 829-712-8189, so I can organise myself a tad more efficiently.

Thank you
Mark.

We're like the Rolling Stones

Every time we say "it's over" there's a comeback!

We thought last Saturday would be the last karaoke of the season, but it appears the singers want more!

Therefore we WILL be having karaoke at MarLou's this Saturday, from 9pm(ish) as always. And I promise that the more singers we have, the fewer songs I will be singing.

Apart from that, the season has definitely wound down now, but we're still working hard to ensure there will be live music at MarLou's over the quiet months. Additionally we are planning some other events to keep the good folks of Costambar amused during the sleepy times ahead.

Enjoy your week.
Mark & Louise.

We had a four-piece band!

It was a great Music Night at MarLou's last night.

Many thanks to everybody who attended and brought their friends with them.

Big thanks go out to our two Band stalwarts "Blind" Bob Curtis & "Toots" Mike Freed who were joined last night by Ivan & David on rhythm and lead guitars.

It was worth the admission just to hear Costambar's senior drummer playing AC/DC!

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

Let the music play

Live music is back at MarLou's!

This Wednesday we have Mike, Bob and a guest playing at MarLou's from about 8pm.

Saturday night we have karaoke, possibly the last formally arranged time this season.

Let's finish the season with a bang folks!

Sunday, April 15, 2012

Apologies to the neighbours

Who'd have thunk it?

The season is over, all but the shouting.

By 9pm the staff at MarLou's out-numbered the customers 3 to 2, then ...

Karaoke kicked-off.

Several new faces, well new to karaoke, and new singers too.

We did run well into the early hours, & are suffering today big-time.

Sorry Costambar if we kept you awake last night.

Nobody called Security, so it can't have been that bad heehee.

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

It's a Mystery!

Well folks we appear to have mis-placed Costambar's favourite saxaphone player. He hasn't been sighted since before the weekend, so unfortunately there's no live music at MarLou's this week.

On the bright side though, we do have a full menu available and have decided to add MarLou's Special Fish to the menu permanently because it's proving so popular. This offers you 12 possible combinations of main courses at MarLou's, all designed to be delicious and nutritious.

Thursday night from 8pm we have the quiz.

Saturday it's MarLou's Karaoke from 9pm

Enjoy your week

Price Increases.

Well we're nearing the end of the Winter Season, & it's been a quiet one for everybody.

As Louise have been going around, we've been keeping an eye on the prices in bars & restaurants, not only in Costambar, but elsewhere as well. Obviously we have a professional interest in these things.

It seems that in the past few weeks, some places have been quietly increasing their food prices, some by 20 Pesos, 30 Pesos, some by more. All power to them if they feel they can charge that for prices in the supermarkets & for fuel have been climbing steadily this Winter.

At MarLou's, however, our prices have remained the same, as have the ingredients & the recipes. We haven't & we won't raise our food prices until the season is well & truely over. Furthermore we will not add the "tourist tax" of 10% & 16% to your bill in order to show artificially low headline menu prices.

One thing worried me when I was preparing this blog. What about our Gold Club Member offers? Have our Gold Club deals got worse over the season? Well, I ran the numbers, comparing like for like, & found that our Gold Club Members would pay the same price today for a two-course meal & drink as they did in November when we launched MarLou's.

You can rest assured that you will always get great value at MarLou's.

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

The famine is over.

We're pleased to announce that the temporary shortage of our delicious Pork Escalopes is over, for the time being at least. So tonight we have our full menu available again for you all.

No live music unfortunately, but we're working on that for next week.

FISH IS BACK!

On Friday Louise will be preparing her fantastic Fish Gondolas

A succulent Mero Filet perfumed with lime
on a bed of vegetables steamed in the oven
& served with a Sweet Potato & Cabbage Slaw.
Only RD200!

As always reservations are appreciated to secure your meal as stocks will be limited.

On Thursday night Mal is your quizmaster from 8pm.

Saturday is karaoke at 9pm(ish)

Enjoy your week

Last night the "Fab Four" played at MarLou's

We had another great music night at MarLou's again last night. Our regular House Band was joined by Steve on keyboards who added a more jazzy feel to the repertoire. We even had some Scottish music to vary the mood.

Once again a big thanks to the guys for sharing their music with us all.

Here's the obligatory slightly grainy pictures.

The calm before the storm.
The storm!

Playing up a storm.

And then there were four.

Steve our new keyboard maestro.
Something I found our last night ...

Apparently there is, in Costambar, a very accomplished jazz accordian player. We also have a retired professional jazz singer in town.

Who would like to see and hear them play at MarLou's?

Working hard to keep you entertained

There's lots going on at MarLou's this week, so without further ado here goes ...

Wednesday - Live Music with the "House Band" plus guest. This may be your last chance to see them, so to hear what everybody's talking about, be at MarLou's!

Thursday - Quiz Night with your quizmaster Pegleg.

Saturday - karaoke with yours truely & our special MarLou's incentive scheme for the singers.

Sunday - More Live Music! This time with the Dominican guitar duo Los Dos Reyes. Romantic music to dine to, or just enjoy over a drink.

Have a good week.
